Birmingham Bars
Birmingham is one of the most lively cities in England with a very young population and a blend of traditional Victorian pubs as well as modern bars and a host of different clubs. If you’re looking for something a little different in your evening’s entertainment then you can also expect to find live music, comedy, and the Balti Belt all situated in the only city outside London that can boast three Michelin star restaurants.
A Young Population
One of the most notable facts about “the Second City” is that it has a culturally diverse and very young population. Approximately 60% of the population is aged between 18 and 64, compared to two thirds in England as a whole. This is further outlined by the existence of many venues, pubs, clubs, cinemas, and restaurants that cater to the younger generation in particular. Music has also played and continues to play a major part in Birmingham’s rich culture.
Victorian Pubs And Modern Bars
As well as catering to those looking for modern bars, Birmingham has many Victorian pubs and restaurants that can be found throughout the city. This combination of new and old is representative of the diversity in the city itself and of the city’s residents and visitors. Birmingham may be home to the largest population of students outside London but it really does have something to offer every visitor of every age and taste.
Broad Street
Visitors looking for a rich vein of nightclubs, bars, and other venues are most likely to find the perfect spot on Broad Street. Now a part of the main city centre, Broad Street combines the new with the traditional and even has its very own Walk of Stars, similar to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The majority of clubs in Birmingham can be found on Broad Street and Brindleyplace although recent years have seen a crop of new venues opening up in other quarters of the city.
Digbeth
Digbeth has a fine concentration of themed pubs and clubs as well as large venues like the Sanctuary and the Medicine Bar. As one of the older regions in Birmingham, much of the skyline of Digbeth is made up of Victorian buildings including the railway viaduct and old industrial buildings. Digbeth was a forerunner in the emergence of electronic music and the rave scene and venues like the Sanctuary nightclub and AIR remain popular for this very reason.
Food And Drink In Birmingham
Birmingham is also well known for its high quality restaurants. It is the only English city outside London with three Michelin star rated restaurants and since 1945 it has become particularly well known for its Indian cuisine. The Balti was invented in Birmingham and an entire food industry has developed around this dish with many critically acclaimed Asian restaurants opening in the area now known as the Balti Belt or Balti Triangle.
Birmingham Bars And More
Birmingham has a lot to offer locals and visitors with an extensive selection of pubs, clubs, bars, and restaurants as well as a lively and culturally popular music scene. Comedy clubs, theatres, and an extensive network of shopping venues as well as the Diamond Quarter also prove very popular for visitors to “the Second City”.
