Durham Nightlife

Like many university cities, Durham offers a choice of cheap, student bars as well as more upmarket, trendy bars. If you can show student ID then you can enjoy a really cheap night out with a pint starting at £1.20 and you’ll also gain access to more of the clubs and late night bars. If you’re looking for good food and a pleasant place to enjoy a drink then you’ll also find the perfect venue in Durham city centre. There’s only really a handful of nightclubs to choose from but there are a number of restaurants and modern bars with later licenses.

Norman Heritage

Among the most notable of attractions in Durham are Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral. These are two of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the country and, as such, have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. As well as once boasting the largest hall in Great Britain (until it was shortened), Durham Castle is the only castle in Britain never to have been breached although the castle is now used as student accommodation for nearby Durham University students.

Places To Eat

Durham has a particularly fine collection of cafes, bars, and restaurants as well as the usual burger joints and takeaways that are situated close to universities and in city centres. Many of the restaurants, such as Zen and Fat Buddha also have modern bars attached to them so you can enjoy an upmarket and slightly more expensive drink than in the local pubs. Most restaurants are relatively quiet except at weekends during term time.

Durham University And The Student Population

Durham university has approximately 17,000 students and has been voted the Sunday Times University of the Year. It is one of several universities that claims to be the third oldest in the country after Cambridge and Oxford. If you’re a student of Durham University or a student elsewhere and have been invited by a Durham University resident then you can visit the Student Union, which holds a wide range of student nights with cheap alcohol and a variety of music.

Durham Pubs And Clubs

There are nearly 50 Durham pubs, clubs, and bars within a one mile radius of Durham cathedral so it certainly isn’t difficult to find somewhere to enjoy a drink. The close proximity of the university also means that drinks are competitively priced even in some of the more exclusive venues. Of particular note is the Shakespeare Tavern which is said to be the most haunted pub in Great Britain or if real ale is your thing then visit The Victoria Inn — voted the best pub in Durham by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).
