Oxford

Oxford Nightlife

With the oldest university in the English speaking world and a youthful student population to match one of the most prestigious centres of education in the world, Oxford is home to a fine assortment of pubs and clubs. As well as venues that cater largely to the student population there are also many cocktail bars, modern bars, and high class restaurants that visitors to Oxford can enjoy during their stay. Further redevelopment of the city centre is planned for the near future, which is likely to mean the opening of even more Oxford pubs and clubs.

City Centre

Oxford offers a unique experience to the visitor. As well as the university, the city centre itself and the outlying regions offer every single style of British architecture dating from the Saxon times onwards with some of the finest examples on display in the centre itself. While Oxford city centre is a relatively small centre it does have a lot to offer. Pedestrianised areas like Cornmarket Street and Queen Street offer chain stores as well as independent retailers while developments like the Westgate Cente are already home to modern and contemporary bars.

Oxford University And The Student Population

Oxford University is one of the most famous and most prestigious universities in the world. As the oldest existing university in the English speaking world it has gained a reputation for developing students to work in virtually every field and is especially well known for its high calibre of graduate. It also helps Oxford enjoy a youthful population in the areas of the city surrounding the university.

Redevelopment Plans

A massive and somewhat controversial redevelopment plan is set to complete in 2011. The existing Westgate Shopping Centre will treble in size to an impressive 750,000 square feet introducing more than 1,000 underground parking spaces as well as a host of new chain stores, some independent retailers, and a selection of bars, pubs, and clubs. This redevelopment is part of a plan called Transform Oxford that will also pedestrianise large areas of the city while improving public transport and offering more to visitors and local residents.

Oxford Landmarks And Places Of Interest

As well as the university and a collection of historical and lively Oxford bars, there are a number of other landmarks that are well worth a visit during your stay in the city. Blackwells Books is believed to be the world’s largest single room selling books. There is also a modern art museum, a botanical gardens, Christ Church Cathedral, and Sheldonian Theatre.

Oxford Pubs And Clubs

Oxford bars do tend to be upmarket and quite modern, although a number of more traditional Oxford pubs and clubs can also be found throughout the city. There’s also a very good combination of early and late bars so you can party the whole night away or sit around and enjoy the conversation; whatever takes your fancy.
