Sheffield Nightlife
Sheffield is a major town in South Yorkshire. With two universities there is a massive student population, currently totalling more than 45,000 that gives light to a serious collection of pubs and clubs to suit every taste. Major clubs are also prevalent in the city and represent the fact that Sheffield has a very rich history in the development of various genres and sub genres of electronic music. While the majority of Sheffield bars and pubs are located along West Street near the university, the clubs are dotted around the city.
Sheffield Universities
Sheffield is actually home to two universities; Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield. West Street essentially links the university student population to the city centre and this makes the surrounding streets very popular with students and clubbers alike. A population of more than 45,000 students makes Sheffield a young and vibrant city but with a little digging you can also find more traditional Sheffield pubs as well as historical sites and places of interest.
The Music Scene
The music scene is an important part of Sheffield’s history. Electronic music genres including synth pop and intelligent dance music are extremely popular in the region and this is evident in the number of dance clubs found in Sheffield city. Before it was destroyed by fire in 2007, the Gatecrasher One nightclub boasted being one of the most popular and busy nightclubs in the North of England. Even though Gatecrasher was destroyed, there are still a lot of dance music venues and Sheffield clubs dedicated to this style of music.
A Shopping Haven
As well as drinking and listening to music, Sheffield is a serious commercial centre and offers avid shoppers a lot of different destinations that include major retail chains as well as boutiques and independent retailers. The city centre is a compact centre that manages to cram in a surprisingly large number of shops. As well as national chain stores you can also find independent stores and those that are especially geared towards students. Shopping centres can also be found in many of the surrounding suburbs.
Sheffield Pubs And Clubs
There really is a varied collection of Sheffield pubs and clubs with every taste adequately catered for. Chain pubs include Weatherspoons offer cheap beer and inexpensive food and if you’re willing to dig around a little more and travel a little further away from West Street you can also find traditional Sheffield pubs that offer real ale rather than mainstream lager and beer. The Frog & Parrot pub even offers the strongest legal ale in the country – well worthy trying although it is a very syrupy mix.
