Southampton Nightlife
 
As you might expect of a large city with two universities and a large port, Southampton offers a lively and extensive nightlife. A network of pubs and clubs stretch throughout Southampton city centre as well as into the suburbs. Different areas of the city have distinctly different vibes with Portswood being popular with students and Polygon and The Marina being two regions that offer more modern and upmarket, and often quieter, bars. Student Population
 
Southampton has a student population of approximately 40,000 thanks to the existence of two universities – The University of Southampton and Southampton Solent University. The existence of the universities as well as a low cost of living and a fine network of varied pubs and clubs has helped Southampton be voted one of the most desirable places to live for single men and women aged between 18 and 30.
 
Portswood
 
Portswood is the student drinking centre of Southampton with many pubs and bars centred solely on attracting university attendees. Cheap drinks and cheap food can be found throughout the region although most venues become especially busy during term time  However, if you’re looking for live music, large beer gardens, and an inexpensive and enjoyable night out then Portswood is definitely the region of Southampton that will attract you most.
 
Polygon And The Marina
 
Polygon is situated just outside the main city centre area and far enough away from Portswood that it is possible to enjoy a quieter drink. Many new bars have opened in this area so you should also expect more pubs, clubs, and bars to open in the near future. For a truly upmarket and more expensive night out you should travel to the Marina where you will be able to find modern and even some VIP bars and clubs.
 
City Centre
 
As well as being able to find many chain pubs and bars in Southampton city centre you can also find some more traditional watering holes as well as a very good selection of places to eat and shop. If you’re looking for real ales and proper beer, however, you will need to travel outside the centre in order to find the old fashioned, local pubs.
