Torquay Nightlife
While not particularly well known for its buzzing nightlife, Torquay along with the rest of the towns that make up Torbay do have a lot going for them. Torquay itself has nine incredible beaches and holds three coveted European blue flag awards thanks to the clean sands and beautifully clear waters. The unusual micro-climate of Torbay also means that Palm Trees can grow freely in the region giving a distinctly unusual feeling to the whole coastline. It’s almost impossible to think of Torquay without mentioning Fawlty Towers which was based on a B&B and set in Torquay.
The Beaches
Three European Blue Flags is more than any other resort in the UK and is truly a testament to the high quality of the sands and the water on the nine incredible beaches. The beaches are among the most popular attractions in Torquay although there are other attractions that include the oldest museum in Devon, Torquay Museum. This museum features an eclectic mix of regional history as well as features on ancient Egypt and famous people from Torquay.
Torbay Climate
Torbay, consisting of Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham has an unusually mild climate that helps to attract visitors from around the world especially during its peak summer months when the population can treble in size from nearly 70,000 to more than 200,000 residents. Cabbage tress or Torbay palms, having been introduced to the region in the 19th century, have flourished and are a recognisable addition to the English Riviera giving Torquay a more Mediterranean feel than we are used to in the UK.
Fawlty Towers And Monty Python
It’s impossible to mention Torquay without making reference to the massively popular sitcom Fawlty Towers starring John Cleese. During his time filming Monty Python episodes he stayed in the Gleneagles Hotel and was inspired by then owner Donald Sinclair to write the Fawlty Towers sitcom.
Stay And Eat In Torquay
Torquay is often considered to be a retirement town because of the high average age of its residents. However, the demography of the town does change during the summer months and if you’re looking for a clement and enjoyable stay in a beautiful area then Torquay really is ideal. Many Bed and Breakfasts line the harbour front offering a personal and inexpensive alternative to hotel accommodation.
Torquay Pubs And Clubs
Torquay pubs and clubs tend to be more traditional in their style and very few modern bars and nightclubs are found in the area. Some bars offer late licenses and some of the hotel bars are also open to non residents for food and for late night entertainment. If you’re looking to party the week away, however, then Torquay may not be the most ideal setting for your trip.
Torquay On BoozeBritain
Torquay is a beautiful and stunning location offering a total of nine beaches as well as inexpensive accommodation and some great local Torquay pubs. Dubbed as the English Riviera it has proven especially popular because of the mild climate and breathtaking sands.
