If you're stupid enough to be sectarian in the first place, there's not a hope in hell of you being smart enough to actually stop being sectarian. This is the reason why I don't even bother arguing with bigots. There's no point! It goes through one ear and out the other.

Stopping them from expressing their sectarian views doesn't actually stop them from possessing sectarian views, and that's the problem. Sectarianism and bigotry is often learned from one's parents and/or surroundings, a child's mind is extremely naive and susceptible and thus the vast majority of the time the prejudices a child learns from their parents continues on through adulthood.
There is no point trying to reason with these people as they are incapable of reason; their tiny little minds can't even grasp the concept - their opinions are evidence of that.

It's passed on, definitely. I was brought up to hate Celtic, hate catholics, hate any other colour than my own and generally be a bigot, it back fired on my mother though, I am now a Celtic fan, and the most tolerant person, I pass that onto my kids as well.......nae luck mither..lol

I doubt it will ever go away, too much hatred in some people.

think it has certanily got a bit better than years ago....it will never go away..well i don't think so....thing is the religious divide..esp in the west of scotland is everywhere....don;'t really think its just an OF problem...football just gives them scope to vent it all.......there is also the people who don't think they are bigots..who truly believe everything they spout..they worry me...

It was never the old firm or even fotballs problem. Football was just venue where it could regularly be voiced en masse

its not just a Celtic and Rangers problem its all starts at an early age where a certain religion demands its own schools
if there was no segregation in the school system things might be better and its wrong to pile all this pish onto the old firm

No, they have done bugger all but reduce atmosphere at games and stop songs being sung.

Im sorry but there are far deeper social issues to deal with. You try going past Bairds after a game or whenever when there is a live singer, and it will be pro-IRA, anti-Orange and anti-British tripe being sung by some daft wee guy on a mic.

Likewise you can go to other pubs on our side and singing happens too. They are trying to crack down on that too but it rarely happens.

Ending schools with religious basis is a start. Religious education should be looked at in Scotland and students should have more say in it and what they want to learn. Religion and education should not be combined.

The clubs can only contain people within a ground but its what happens at home that teaches people. I admit, ill sing songs in the boozer, ill come on here and crack 1690 jokes and so on, and i dont care - nor do i really mean any malice when i do so. My mum was born a Catholic (not practicing) and my dad a Protestant. I wasnt brought up to hate Catholics, i dont at all. I may not agree with aspects of their religion, but there are things i dont agree with in ALL religions, even my own. The fact that i like to learn and challenge what i learn doesnt make me a bigot.

I learned all the repetoire of Gers songs when i was younger going to games, singing about things i had no idea about. Now i do, do i still sing them? Not at games no, but if there was a good singsong in a boozer after a game, aye i would.

I wouldnt do it outside to antagonise some Celtic fans, unless it was my mates to wind them up.

I think in 30 years the game will be a bit more sterilised in terms of the religious divide so in that effect yes, i think it will work, but they are going totally the wrong way about it. Its a deeper social issue in Scotland than just stopping singing, its about educating kids properly, and that begins at home, and at school.
